As Gardner's biographer, I had a bird's-eye view of his creative process and was pleased to see that his life work was not as product-oriented as I first expected.5 But I still found the term "experimental archaeology" a bit misleading: "Modern archaeology is based on factual knowledge and scientific methodology, whereas, of course, experimental archaeology is not.6 While many of his earlier experiments involved statistical, quantitative experimentation on specific items and events, by the 1930s his experiments started covering broader subject areas (and experimenting with a more diverse group of subjects) and were less dependent on evidence of specific events in.
